Ausbildung: Stephen is intrigued by the same sentiment expressed by the great artist Joan Miro - to attain the maximum of intensity with the minimum of means. His abstract compositions, devoid of any clutter, contain a strong sense of apprehension as hinted in the titles of his works and emphasised by the reds of passion. Large surfaces of white bare spaces and dark patches of infinite blacks provide a timeless setting against which carefully placed elements resonate within the confines of the canvas. The accidental also plays an important part in the final execution of the paintings ... just as in life. In fact the artist refrains from exercising obsessive control over the exact shape of his elements and the medium is given a life of its own so that it often flows outside the predetermined parameters.
